Dear Yulegoat,

Hello, and thank you! Yuletide is a lot of effort and it means a great deal to me that you are spending such energy on me. With that in mind, I truly mean it when I say I hope you enjoy yourself first and foremost. My sincerest request is that you don't force it; use my prompts as jumping-off points, by all means, but I'd rather read a great story written with conviction that I wouldn't have expected than a mediocre story that checks off every box on my list.

As far as that list goes, I've repeated it most every year and you can find it in my previous letters in my tag, but honestly I feel okay skipping over it this time. The stories I like the best are those that are organic, emotionally truthful, and nuanced. The stories that I like the least are facile, gratuitously sentimental or edgy, without consequence or courage. I love plot - partly because I can't write it to save my life - but I also love character studies, absurd comedies, and lyricism (though not extremely opaque prose). Characterization, sense of place, and tone will always win me over. Also girls, gays, and friendship! What can I say? Secretly I'm easy. Just no mindwipes, please.

For your visual learning pleasure: a tumblr tag just for you! (It is not distributed in proportion to my interest in these fandoms.)

And now, my six prompts!

LUTHER )

SEVEN KINGDOMS TRILOGY AKA BITTERBLUE )

TEEN BEACH MOVIE )

FINGERSMITH )

DANCE ACADEMY )

THE X-FILES RPF )

I hope this helps a bit! Again, if you are at any sort of a loss, my "yuletide!!!" tag has more, and really so does the rest of my journal. I am an open book with plenty of opinions, but at the end of the day I still want to see yours. Have fun and don't stress out too much <3

love!!!
Tris B

YULETIDE

allchildren: "my favorite part was everything" (ɤ the whole world)
Dear Yulegoat,

Thank you!!!! Don't panic! Listen, this is my fifth Yuletide and the sad fact is, I haven't got the attention span to worry about both the story I have to produce and the story I will receive. If history is any indication, I will spend every day till Christmas rolling myself into knots about my assignment and only when fics go live will I remember that I get a present too: a happy surprise and reward just for me! SO EXCITING! Basically I love presents and I love surprises, and I super believe that the best creative work comes from a genuine creative impulse, so don't stress about trying to jump through my hoops -- just write your story, and I will be bowled over by happiness and gratitude, I guarantee.

However, if I were you I'd be in knots as aforementioned, so I'm gonna give you a rundown of my taste preferences, but here's the cheat sheet: yes to nuanced and organic, no to facile and sentimental.

Or, detailed-er: )
Also on the off chance that it may be helpful for you, I've made a tag for you on my tumblr (mostly weighted towards Adventure Time, because that's what I reblog a ton of -- but I feel equally passionate about all these requests). Think of it as a mood board, or an inspirational collage? Yulegoat 12, what what.

Requests, further details, and how-to-finds below.

New Girl )

The Good Wife )

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries )

Marceline and the Scream Queens )

Let's see, is that it? Feel free to browse all my online presences ([tumblr.com profile] anygoddamnedcolleen, [twitter.com profile] beatricks, [archiveofourown.org profile] TrisB, and my old LJs are archived at [personal profile] allbackups) and harass my friends and if all else fails, make shit up. Just have fun, okay?

Thank you!

love,

yuletide!

Yuletide was, as always, intensely difficult in its own special way and ultimately very rewarding. I received THREE (excellently written and tailored to my desires) full-length fics! Y'all jealous.

TWO (!!!!!!!) fics for my request of I Think Emma Woodhouse is Kinda Gay:

Love and Longing by Lysimache, in which Emma falls for an OFC who is delightfully realized and I kind of love also.
Discordancy by Rosedark, which is sexy and tense and to my great joy makes Emma/Jane Fairfax be a thing, AND THEN SOME.

and one for my flaily Dianecentric-but-really-I-love-everyone Twin Peaks request:

Face of the Moon by Amatara, which, no shade intended to any other story, might be the greatest fic ever written*. I JUST. DIANE IS PERFECT AND ALBERT IS PERFECT AND GORDON IS BARKING IN CAPSLOCK AND DIANE CAN TELL COOPER HAS BEEN POSSESSED BY BOB BECAUSE HIS OPINION ABOUT BAKED GOODS CHANGES.

*except of course the other greatest fic ever written, The Ivory Horn by kaydeefalls, which I received for Yuletide 2007.

So anyway THAT WAS A PRETTY GREAT HAUL.

What I wrote was a Hey Arnold! story about Helga and her feelings and also Arnold called Stay and See (What Becomes of Us). Yikes. I can't claim to be entirely happy with this fic, as I know it could use easily a couple thousand more words, but these last two months being what they were, I did what I could. Which was mainly "listen to a lot of Thao and a little Miles" and also "cry at Mem and Mer and Patrick and Imry about it" and most alarmingly "write one last scene on Christmas Eve when Mem told me I needed it even though I had already gotten celebratorily drunk" plus "rewrite and edit through my sobered up exhaustion until an hour before the archive went live"; but I'm left feeling kind of excited by the growth I think that comes with those thousands unwritten words. Because without a deadline cutting me off, I think I might actually write them next time around? (sudden frysquint at self accidentally mirroring Helga/Arnold in the story with my own relationship with writing) Uhhh. Anyway. THAT HAPPENED.

Probably my last LJ entry before bahleetion, woo! SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, ETC.
allchildren: "my favorite part was everything" (ɤ the whole world)
Dear yuletide author person,

Hi! DON'T PANIC. Yes. That's the only message I have to give that isn't readily apparently in my signup itself. I know my requests are pretty single-minded, and may not match what you consider your skill set to be -- but I have faith in you, and I value your Yuletide experience! Write something you enjoy and can believe in and is authentic to you, and I truly believe that is what will give me the best reading experience. Emotional truth: pretty much what I value the most in stories. Also nuance. Know this, and you're set!

...aaaand I just lost the draft of the rest of this letter. Sigh. To be honest with you, I'm not too broken up about it; I've written a *lot* of cover letters this year, and after a while all letters describing oneself to strangers start to feel the same. Here's what I'm gonna do: I'm going to link you to my previous Yuletide letters

2010
2009 (maybe just read this one; it's the most thematically relevant)
2007 (contains talk about Princess Tutu, which is sort of orthagonally relevant cuz it's an anime based on Swan Lake and also my favorite show of all time)

and add just a couple notes and links to my requests as necessary under the cut )

and I'm going to send you over to my tumblr, where I've collated some Swan Lake, Dexter, and Twin Peaks-related items (I don't have anything for Emma! but I think my request speaks for itself? I love Sarah Waters's historical lesbian fiction, does that help?) for you under "yulegoat." If you still haven't clicked, it's here! Besides pictures, there are some words (both in the posts and the tags, on the right side in pink) and hopefully no matter what kind of information-absorber you are, you'll get something out of this method.

And if you're totally weirded out by my methods or Tumblr goes down for the next month (entirely possible, alas), still do not panic, because you cannot go wrong if you just write your story and have fun. That is what I want the most. Cheesy but trufax.

love and gratitude,

tris b.

allchildren: kay eiffel's face meets the typewriter (☢ and he was screaming)
After my first year of Yuletide (wherein I defaulted, and then ended up writing the pinch hit for the assignment I defaulted on), I have been determined to never be that silly again, but 2009 and 2010 Yuletide were both much, much more challenging than that first year, which just goes to show you that, uh ... writing is hard? I'm good at finding new ways to make Yuletide way harder for myself than it should be? #ITSAPROCESS?

And still for some reason I persevere! My story this year was Sincerely, Cindi. (Metropolis: The Chase Suite - Janelle Monae)

And now, I would like to discuss my Yuletide ~process. Seriously. Not even the fic. I barely talk about the actual finished fic. This is like nine thousand words on just the fucking process.

Pre-Assignment

this may seem wordy now, but later you will miss it. you will miss my sweet brevity. )

Finally: An Assignment!

research and robofeminism and philosophy and theology and oh my god she's not going to shut up, is she??? )

But hey, maybe I'll write a robofeminist antiracist postcolonialist dissertation one of these days after all! OR MAYBE THIS GIANT, GIANT ENTRY SHALL HAVE TO SUFFICE

You know... consuming a drink that contained caffeinated soda was perhaps not the smartest choice I made last night. I don't know. It is possible.

Yayyyy, Yuletide!

You guys. I GOT BONNIE/CAROLINE FIC! ~FUCK YEAAAAAAH~ It's all MEATY (BLOODY, even) and FEELINGSY and oh my god this Caroline is amazeballs. SO GOOD. Read it read it and comment, my writer is great and should feel great! :DDDD

(THANK YOU)

The fic that I wrote is up, too (OMG MY RECIPIENT SEEMS TO LIKE IT?! *bites lip*) and obvs I cannot tell you what it is, but I will say that while in the past I was confident none of my friends would even read, let alone identify, my fic, I have no such assurance this year. So if you'd like to guess what fic I wrote, comments will be screened and I will reward correct guesses with the drabble of your choice.

Ah. What do I normally do with my hands? What will life be like without the stress of this project (so much work! like, AWESOME stress because omg best assignment ever, but still, stress) hanging over me? You mean, I get to roll around in other people's stories now? I get to plan the ridiculous commentary for this, and last year's Yuletide too while I'm at it? All of this, and Hipster Who too??

Baby Jesus, you scoundrel.

Happy Saturday, everyone. <3
allchildren: bonnie, caroline, and elena hold a seance (ⱴ found girls)
My sweet beleaguered Yuletide writer, I write to you at last! I can't apologize enough for the delay; my brain hasn't been working too well lately. Let me stress again that you are amazing, there is no actual way you could make something out of these requests that I don't adore, and above all I hope that you write the story that you want to write. Stories need conviction, not compliance. I also want to apologize for screwing up with my original "letter" as I think I made it seem more pregnant than it really should have been -- although my requests WERE rushed and brief by my wordy-ass standards, I have no twists to spring on you and I don't have a lot to add to what are basically open-ended prompts. More than anything this letter is just a collection of information, links, and supplemental material that you might find useful (and if you don't work that way, then please feel free to disregard it!). And if you wanted to and had time, you could mine a lot more general information from any of the following although you should absolutely not feel obligated to:

my DW/LJ (these two tags especially deal heavily with my ~feelings~ and priorities regarding fiction)
my tumblr, which lately is mostly fashion but is fully searchable and is pretty well tagged for fannish stuff
my fic, the most recent of which is at AO3 along with some old favorites, and my entire back catalogue at delicious

AND MANY MORE! But it is December so Imma try not to overwhelm you with links to stuff you can find if for some reason you wish to.

I've had an epiphany, and that's that really, everything boils down to one simple value - NUANCE. Absolutes are fucking boring, as well as unknown in nature. Maybe this is what drives me to consider the reasoning of villains, seek the dark side of heroes, and cherish the cracks in a perfect veneer -- the universe is much too complex for me to be interested in obviousness and black-or-white.

that said, here are some specific squicks and loves )

All my requests include characters of color, and while I hope that doesn't change anything for you or the story, I do ask that you treat those aspects with awareness.

AND NOW! Request time!!

Parks and Rec )

Scott Pilgrim )

The Vampire Diaries )

Community RPF )

THAT IS IT. I'm so, so, so sorry you had to wait this long -- I realize it's pretty anticlimactic! I hope I haven't royally screwed you over and I really do mean it that I will be delighted with whatever you deliver! Merry Happy, sweet Yuleperson. <3

Dear Yuletide author,

I spent hours writing and revising my requests and in an errant click of the mouse managed to lose them entirely! And now my brain is working at approximately ten percent capacity. So if my requests seem terse now, don't fret -- I think I have literally never written a Yuletide letter that was shorter than my Yuletide story. It may take me a few days, but I will have a proper letter to you up soon, bursting with my many thoughts on what I love the most. Although I can give you a couple spoilers now and tell you all I love ladies, their relationships, their feelings, and I hope you have fun with it because I will be enthralled no matter what you do!

WHAT DID YOU WRITE FOR YULETIDE?
Well, I can't tell you. Because it is a secret. And you're not going to guess it. But I will tell you the funny story about how I was matched on one fandom, and was acquainted with two others my recipient requested, and then decided with barely any time left to learn ou fourth fandom because that's how I roll. And then after uploading decided my fic was incredibly terrible and wrote an entirely new one today and edited all signs of the other. That is my funny story.

HA, HA?
well, it was funny when it happened to me

Thank agod the archive is at AO3 this year -- editing! So much editing I will do! I WOULD SAY I CAN'T WAIT but what I actually can't wait for is to watch Survivor and more DS9 and walk my dog and make a mix CD and be a normal person for like a day before going back in to fix my mess of a fic. (Hijinks, you guys. Hijinks.)

Also, just fyi, anyone with an AO3 account can participate in Yuletide Madness this year! Thousands of prompts enter, bonus fics of any size leave. Fun for all. :D

So, for those Yuletide Madness-ers, and for the pinch hitter who will probably end up with my initial request as all signs indicate (eta: or maybe not?! the signs are liars, man, whatever I AIN'T COMPLAINING) my original writer deadline-defaulted, here is my Yuletide letter! And, like. I know I come across as completely fucking nuts in that thing. I know it goes on forever and is probably terrifying. But probable pinch-hitter, I just want you to know that I'm actually pretty chill, and I just want some fic about some girls and/or dudes being awesome, and anything else that is or isn't there is just peachy. <3333
