feet untethered and safe

Traditional end of year meme, take nine.

2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004

1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
Spend all year on a single medication. Consider myself not cis. Live and vote in a US state other than California (and by myself). Seen snow fall and then some.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I resolved to learn one new recipe each month, but pretty much forgot after April. I don't have any real resolutions for next year. I want to be brave, the bravest.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
One of my coworkers but I really don't know her very well!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My dad's best friend. My bubbe.

5. Which countries did you visit?
Pittsburgh is its own little world.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?

Next year I would like: a CAR! BENEFITS! A PET! and I would still like admission to university but at this point I'm like ehhh it's cool, it'll happen, it'll happen.

7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
November 6th: the day I started my job, voted for President Obama's reelection, and lost my last grandparent.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Uhhhh I guess formulating and executing a fast and loose plan to move across the country to a strange new city and find employment and housing of my very own, was kind of okay.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I didn't get into UC Davis, even on appeal. But I actually don't feel bad about that and don't feel like I failed at all; I think I put together a pretty great appeal so actually I guess my failure has to do with not complying with their red tape mathy bullshit. I'm fine with what I chose to do instead, and really just wish I had saved more after I moved instead. Also finish The Wooden Woman although IDK when.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not notably :))))))))))))))

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Plane tickets.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
So many people's. I have to thank Tropie and her Fancyman most of all for welcoming me into their home and social circle and letting me borrow their car all the time and showing me around and being amazingly patient as I made a giant mess of their dining area for two and a half months. Similarly Rorie let me stay with her for a week and picked me up at the airport at 6 am; my coworker Karen drove me home from work most nights; my friend Deanna drove out TO work and drove me home many others (honorable mentions to Cara and Alexis for six more rides home between them!). Before I left, Ariel and Jeremy and Stacy pulled out many a stop to support and chauffeur me through the spring; my friends who came to my going away party especially Jen cuz it's a four hour drive she had already made round trip two weeks before; M and Mr. Helix took me to the airporter! Plus Carrie did all the driving in Chicago which was not fucking easy. And Rawles gave me a tablet AND a Kindle which I have already lost to the bus gods. And my family sent me warm happy things from home and my doctor renewed my Effexor scrip from 2500 miles away and also wrote me a letter of recommendation. BASICALLY A HELL OF A LOT OF YOU HAVE DONE ALL KINDS OF RIDICULOUS THINGS FOR ME OUT OF FRIENDSHIP AND YOU ARE ALL FUCKING ROCK STARS.

And! Meredith, for surviving like a mofo.

And! I don't know if you know this but the Giants won the World Series. Buster Posey was NL MVP.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The bus gods'. The management at my summer temp job, plus my nemesis there, Art. Whoever at Hipfabric made the combination of decisions and computer errors that created the most clusterfucky holiday season I care to imagine. The gun-loving religious right.

14. Where did most of your money go?

15. What were you really, really, really excited about?
Seeing Fiona Apple was a big one. The Giants!!! never 4get a month of agony on twitter. Getting to see my AC and Mer again.

16. What song will always remind you of 2012?
"Dance For You" by Dirty Projectors. "U Should Know Better" by Robyn & Snoop Dogg.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) Happier or sadder?

b) Bigger or smaller?

Probs a bit bigger.

c) Richer or poorer?

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Saving money and spending sensibly. Reading, always.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Leaving expensive electronics on transit seats. Eating junk food at work but LOOK IT'S EVERYWHERE IT'S SO HARD NOT TO!!

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I'm gonna hang out with Kass and Deanna for atheist Christmas. Also read some Yuletide.

21. What was your favourite month of 2012?
I don't know. September? I went to New York in September.

22. Did you fall in love in 2012?
no but here's a secret I kind of want to start dating in 2013 maybe shhhhh you didn't hear that from me

23. What was your favourite TV programme?
Adventure Time, come on grab your friends, we'll go to very distant lands with Jake the Dog and Finn the Human, the funnnn will never end it's Adventure TIME. Also, Gravity Falls. Elementary. Treme. New Girl.

24. How did you see in the New Year?
Karaoke at the Mint with Beccap. Classic.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

26. What was the best book you read?
Sarah Waters's The Little Stranger has stuck with me. Even moreso, Octavia Butler's Parable of the Talents.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I barely barely listened to new music this year. Grimes and Yelle.

28. What did you want and get?
For Pittsburgh to work out.

29. What did you want and not get?
For Davis to work out.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Beasts of the Southern Wild or Brave.

31. What did you do on your birthday?
I was in Sacto and then went to Davis for Chinese and a lovely lemon cake with the cones. The waitress at the restaurant made me an origami piece out of a dollar, which was the sweetest thing ever and I keep in my wallet for luck. I then proceeded to dogsit four dogs for like two weeks straight, and went out for Thai with my family when I came home.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If I could have brought my dog with me when I moved, or not lost my camera, or afforded a car ever. I'm pretty satisfied though.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
The Joan Holloway drag started making me feel grody and gender dysphoric, so I was mostly like "fuck flattering I just wanna dress the way I would dress if I were skinny," so I did.

34. What kept you sane?
Effexor, pretty pictures of pretty people, cartoons, Twitter during the MLB postseason.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Kristen Stewart, Liu Wen, Neko Case, Lizzy Caplan...

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Newtown :[

37. Who did you miss?
All my friends especially Ariel. The Giants nation -- so strange watching an incredible postseason in a town where nobody cared.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I've met so many new people this year! So many new friends and coworkers. Special shoutouts to Mer's Marie, work's Alexis, and THE FANCIES.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
In 2011 I said last year: "The Giants won the World Series." Is not the obvious update "The Giants can't win the World Series without Buster Posey"?

Is not the obvious update that WITH Buster Posey, the Giants cannot help but win the World Series???

Also, nothing is fucked, dude.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

it's a champagne year full of sober months
through my maudlin days, through my dry moments
gotta get young fast
gotta get young quick
gotta make this last
if it makes me sick
