What I don't understand is also why it has to be ONE COMPANION always. How about two or three people, of different genders and races and backgrounds, who all have important relationships with each other? How about a story in which the interpersonal dynamics are not centered around the Doctor?

OH WAIT LOL NO THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
