i have always thought of feminism as promoting gender equality, rather than specifically empowering women (though i realize that is how it started out since that's the issue that prompted the movement in the first place, and obviously a lot of people still think of it that way). i like the word feminism and the idea of it (as i see it, that is), so it's unfortunate to learn that it is problematic/hurtful for other people. this is interesting though, and thinking and gaining new perspectives are good things, so.
