N&S is new on me, but I am fairly familiar with the Victorian era and its narratives. The adaptation, however, was made within the last five years and makes absolutely no attempt to engage with any of these issues in a way that does anything but reinforce the power structure which should by all rights and, as you say, by the author's intention, be the subject of consciousness-raising criticism. That is what I object to. N&S is just the thing that set me off, not the thing that itself offends me.
